How to Master Lead Generation and Automations with Ro Shah

Updated: May 9

A person views a photo of a woman in blue on a laptop screen. The setting is a cafe with a wicker chair. Text on screen: "QLB Veda Branding".

When it comes to lead generation and automation, you have to learn from the best. In today’s blog post, we’re diving deep into a conversation I had with Ro Shah, a powerhouse sales coach and entrepreneur who has built a thriving business around helping women of color entrepreneurs create systems that successfully scale their businesses.

We connected through Threads, and let me tell you, the Threads algorithm is pure magic. It has connected me with so many brilliant entrepreneurs, and Ro is definitely one of them.

Who is Ro Shah?

Ro is a former McKinsey consultant and software engineer with over five years of experience working in New York City. With a degree in computer engineering and a master’s in systems engineering, Ro transitioned from her corporate life to full-time entrepreneurship. In just three years, she has made over $500,000 in sales and built a company that empowers women of color entrepreneurs to create systems that truly work for them.

Why Posting on Social Media Alone Isn’t Enough

Ro says it best: Simply posting on social media and waiting for clients to find you is not going to cut it. You have to take control by being proactive. The key to success is mastering what Ro calls the “Proactive Pursuit Method,” where instead of waiting around for leads to come to you, you go out and find them.

The Power of Pitching and Building Relationships

Ro’s journey started with her building a lead generation agency where her team booked calls for business owners. However, she realized that her clients weren’t learning how to generate leads themselves, so she pivoted to coaching. Today, she teaches entrepreneurs how to be proactive with their lead generation by actively engaging with potential clients through DMs and building authentic relationships.

What does her approach look like? It’s simple:

  1. Empathize with the person you’re reaching out to.

  2. Give a genuine compliment about something they do well.

  3. Ask an open-ended question to build rapport.

  4. Present your offer as the solution to their problem.

Common Misconceptions About Lead Generation

A major misconception that Ro points out is believing that opening a business is enough to get clients. Just because you have a business, doesn't mean clients are lining up at your door. You have to actively go after them. This is where the proactive pursuit method shines.

“Lead generation is like dating,” Ro says. “You can’t just put all your hopes on one lead. Keep engaging, keep building connections.”

Practical Lead Generation Strategies for Beginners

If you’re starting from scratch or struggling to get clients, here are some strategies Ro recommends:

  1. Find Your Ideal Client: Know who your audience is and where they hang out. Are they on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or TikTok?

  2. Send DMs Regularly: Start engaging with potential clients. Give compliments, ask questions, and build genuine connections.

  3. Use Social Proof: Having content on your profile helps potential clients feel more comfortable trusting you.

  4. Collaborate with Others: Podcast appearances, IG Lives, and joint content creation can expose you to new audiences.

  5. Automation Tools: Use tools like ManyChat, Zapier, and Airtable to streamline your outreach and follow-up process.

Automations To Simplify Your Lead Generation

Ro introduced me to some powerful automation tools to make your life easier.

  • ManyChat: Ideal for automating responses when your content goes viral and collecting leads.

  • Zapier: Connects various tools to help you keep track of leads and follow-ups.

  • Airtable: Allows you to schedule automatic follow-ups, even years later, to re-engage leads.

The Power of Consistent Follow-Ups

If someone ghosts you, don’t take it personally. People get busy. Just like a family member who forgets to respond to a text, your potential clients might have simply been caught up with life. Follow up, follow up, and follow up again. As Ro says, “Take your ego out of the equation and just follow up.”

Ro’s Advice for Entrepreneurs Looking to Master Lead Generation

Ro’s final piece of advice is simple: Hire someone to guide you. Trying to figure it all out yourself can take years. But if you invest in mentorship or coaching, your business can grow significantly faster.
